Prayer and Fasting Guide

February 16-17, 2021

We Invite you to

Fast for 24 Hours to Begin Lent

LifeSong invites you to participate in a fast for 24 hours beginning at your evening meal on Tuesday, February 16th . You are invited to join us and break your fast at the Ash Wednesday Soup Supper February 17th . We recognize that not everyone may be able to fast so, we ask that you participate in the spirit of the fast by willingly depriving the body of some pleasurable tastes such as coffee or other stimulants.

Biblical fasting, unlike fasting for medical or health reasons, must be done with an attitude of seriousness and sincerity. When we fast, we willingly deprive the body of nourishment and the pleasurable taste of food. The body requires food for sustenance; therefore our hearts and minds must be totally focused and directed towards God so that He may be the full source of our strength during our period of fasting.

Fasting must also be done in an attitude of humility. It is not necessary for others to know we are fasting; it is directed towards God. “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:17-18).

In addition to our attitudes towards God and our stance before man, our motives must also be correct. We should fast in order to further the building up of God’s kingdom by seeking to minister to others.

The prophet Isaiah received from the Lord the acceptable motives for our fasts: “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to lose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter — when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” (Isaiah 58:6-7).

Read Matthew 6: 1-6

  • Please read the following meditations and prayers for each missed meal
  • The final prayer can be prayed together at the Soup Supper Event. The information for Soup Supper is on the back of this booklet.

“Inner Peace”

Evening Meal:  Tuesday, February 16th

“Today may there be peace within. May I trust that I am exactly where I am meant to be. May I not forget the infinite possibilities that are born in myself and others. May I use the gifts that I have received and pass on the love that has been given to me. May I be content with myself just the way I am. Let this knowledge settle into my bones, and allow my soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each of us.” Anonymous

The Serenity Prayer

            God grant me the serenity

To accept the things, I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

“Peace and Unity in the Church”

Breakfast:  Wednesday, February 17th

This morning like every morning is a gift from God. Turn aside for a while from your daily activity and escape your daily routine for a moment. Put aside your cares, let your distractions wait, free yourself for a while with God and rest awhile in His presence. Shut out everything except God, and when you have shut the door, seek him. Now, my soul, say to God, ‘I seek your face; Lord it is your face that I seek.

Lord Jesus you prayed that your people would be one, forgive us Lord and take away the pride and arrogance which divides your church. Break down the walls which separate us; unite us with your bonds of love and accomplish your will. I pray that by the power of your Spirit your healing would work in the body of your church and through me, to bring about the purpose of your will.

Peace in Our Country and the World

Lunch:  Wednesday, February 17th

At Lunch take a few moments to contemplate the state of our country and our world. Each passing day leads to more decisiveness and conflict. The recent elections in our country, random killing for no logical reason, and everyone shouting their opinions at the top of their lungs. The One who made us did not make us for this. Turn to God in prayer and ask him for unity and peace.

Prayer For Peace Among Nations

O Almighty God,

the Father of all humanity,

turn, we pray, the hearts of all peoples and their rulers,

that by the power of your Holy Spirit

peace may be established among the nations

on the foundation of justice, righteousness and truth,

through him who was lifted up on the cross

to draw all people to himself,

your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Closing the fast

Dinner:  Wednesday, February 17th

For the last 24 hours you have denied your body that which it desires. The hunger you have experienced was intended to be a constant reminder to focus your thoughts on the Lord. He who created all things gave you the ability to choose. Without price He offered you, personal salvation. Since He created all things there is nothing you can give Him except your heart. If you know Jesus, you know He desires peace. Let peace begin in you and grow to the whole world.

Heavenly Father, we have sought Your grace and guidance to bring peace to ourselves, LifeSong, and to the world. Be with each of us as we break our fast. Inspire us to do your will to bring about peace. Bless this food to our use and us to Your service.
